Some major stores are open on Thanksgiving for a pre-Black Friday sales boost. While most Black Friday deals and coupons won't be available until midnight at the earliest, several big-box retailers are hoping that the urge to get a jump on holiday shopping will lure Americans from their homes. Looking around, though, I think most of my family's neighbors are more keen to find an open grocery store: there's a more pressing need for stuffing ingredients and turkeys than for socks, at least until tomorrow. Most major gorcery stores will have limited opening hours on Thanksgiving Day, but be prepared for shopping-crt traffic jams and parking-lot mayhem. If you must visit a grocery store on Thanksgiving, go early.

  • Walmart: Most stores open 24 hours (Walmart Black Friday flyer)
  • Kmart: 7 am to 9 pm
  • The Gap: 9 am to 9 pm
  • Banana Republic: 11am to 6 pm
  • Old Navy: noon to 7 pm
To lure more customers into their stores this holiday shopping season, several big-box retailers are opening on Thanksgiving Day in addition to extending their Black Friday hours
