The Sukhothai's Celadon Thai Restaurant In Bangkok, Thailand
The Celadon Thai restaurant located in The Sukhothai Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand offers diners the opportunity to experience real traditional Thai food that is also served in a traditional and beautiful location. Set in two free-standing buildings on the lush grounds of The Sukhothai, Celadon offers both indoor and outdoor seating that is surrounded by lotus ponds.
The interior décor brings to mind the Sukhothai period of Thai history when the capital was set in the ancient city of Sukhothai, a time that is referred to as the golden age of Thai civilization and the exteriors of the buildings reflect the timeless style of the Thai pavilions.
The menu is large and inclusive with dishes representing the Central, Northern and Southern regions of the country. When dining here I have always been struck by the exquisite attention to detail that the chefs exercise when they prepare these delicious dishes. From the appetizer section entries of crispy catfish and green mango salad to the toasted dried shrimps with toasted coconut to the fried marinated chicken in pandamus leaves, the presentations of the dishes match the timeless flavors. And these are just the appetizers.
In keeping with the emphasis on serving food from different regions, the appetizer section includes, among others, crispy basa fish with a thick lemongrass sauce from the central region and spicy sausage with lettuce and herbs from the north. The large salad section offers the well-known som tam or papaya salad with crispy catfish and pomelo salad with steamed prawns, a long-time favorite, along with many others including a personal favorite, the fried soft shell crab with spicy hearts of palm.
A spicy green curry fish soup with cumin, a northeastern specialty, highlights the soup entries which also include old favorites like tom yum goong, basically the national dish of Thailand, and tom kha gai, a coconut-based chicken soup.
The seafood and main course sections contain a few decidedly non-Thai dishes such as Maine lobster and a spicy Australian beef fillet that does contain some aromatic Thai herbs but the chefs manage to give them a bit of a Thai touch nonetheless. There are also authentic Thai dishes such as wok-fried spicy seafood, sautéed morning glory with spicy pork and crab with curry powder. And the extensive section of Thai curry dishes contains many well-known varieties as well as some that I suspect may be the chef’s own creations like the green curry of Norwegian sea scallops. And I haven’t even mentioned the grill and vegetarian sections yet but suffice it to say that they also offer a wide selection of dishes that are both traditional and a bit modern.
What Celadon really offers its guests is a chance to experience Thai food and culture in a superbly done manner that is varied, interesting and authentic all at once.
