Times Square has celebrated the coming of the New Year with all the pomp and circumstance of times past. It has not lost it's luster in any way. People flocked to the area from all over the country and all over the world. Networks interviewed people from all the states in the union as well as countries across the world like Canada, England, Australia, Mexico and many more (too many to list).

The new ball was a sight to see. "Covered in 2,668 Waterford Crystals and powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDS, the new Ball is capable of creating a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns producing a spectacular kaleidoscope effect atop One Times Square."

The Clinton's were invited by the mayor of New York to join him and his family in launching the ball for the countdown to 2009.

"As the clock struck midnight Wednesday, a ton of confetti fluttered down on the revelers bundled up in fur hats, coats and sleeping bags. Fireworks burst atop the tower where the ball was lowered. Noisemakers screeched, partygoers kissed and cheers echoed through the corridors of midtown Manhattan.

Former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton, expected to be secretary of state in President-elect Barack Obama's administration, joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg to lower the ball atop 1 Times Square for the 60-second countdown to midnight."

As the Clinton's left the area, in their usual way, they walked and shook hands and stood for pictures with many in the crowd who had not been deterred by the frigid cold to come out and enjoy this ushering in of the New Year.

Public parties across the city, hosted by  networks around the world, included the entertainment such as Lady GaGa, Jonas Brothers, Lionel Ritchie and many more.

Many churches in the area will be celebrating the incoming year on January 1st the old fashioned way. Some have a much more extensive week long plan, like St. Mary The Virgin Episcopal Church, on Times Square, New York.
