The survey’s criteria were as follows: Calculating the percentage of registered voters who turned out for state and federal elections from 2004 to 2008 from Dave Leip’s Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections, money spent on military veterans per capita from the Department of Veterans Affairs, percentage of residents who volunteer for civic activities, charities or neighbors according to Volunteering in America, and the sales of fireworks and U.S. flags based on numbers from SimplyMap and americanflags.com.

I find it almost impossible for Portland to be #1, and Seattle #4. I recently lived in Portland for 4 years and have lived coast to coast over the last 10 years and found the Pacific Northwest to be the most unpatriotic place. This is an area that you will frequently see flags burned/painted over in protest, and the worst public and social backlashing against a US president I have ever seen (even if not great, still the US president). The 4th of July didn't seem to me anything more than a day off from work...sometimes I wondered if people knew what that day was about. I didn't feel they supported anything the government does. Most of my Oregon friends agreed with me, and made fun of how patriotic I was! It is also interesting that the east coast is barely listed. I have never been so overwhelmed with patriotic pride than I was living in Virgina and traveling up and down the coast. I've never seen so many flags, strong support of the government, of the troops. The Red, White, and Blue colors were everywhere: in clothing, stores, buildings, newspapers, news, as opposed to the Bob Marley colors in the PNW.
