NP Rank:
Top Baby Names of the Decade
Baby names are a trend all their own, and so we can't ignore the top baby names of the decade. The most popular baby names of the decade, according to BabyCenter, are:
Girls' Names:
- Emma
- Emily
- Madison
- Isabella
- Ava
- Sophia
- Kaitlyn
- Hannah
- Hailey
- Olivia
Boys' Names:
- Aiden (I know one guy who named his son Aidan)
- Jacob
- Ethan
- Matthew
- Nicholas
- Jack ("We named the monkey 'Jack'"- Captain Barbossa*)
- Joshua
- Michael
- Ryan
- Andrew
Apparently, names starting with the letters J, K, and L have been trendy, though they don't dominate the top ten of either list above; Jack and Joshua are common American names regardless of the year. Parents are into pop culture (ahem, Twilight) when choosing baby names, though: Bella was #67 for 2009, but nowhere to be seen in previous poll years. Oh, and Marley is gaining ground as a gender-neutral name. This means that, yes, parents are likely naming their kids after a dog. After all, Bob Marley has been part of the pop-culture firmament for a generation, but the name is only trending after a certain Owen Wilson movie?
Our final list takes into account how well the names ranked each year, how many times they appeared in the top 50, and the highest point they climbed to, among other factors.
According to the US Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names from 2008 were:
Girls:
- Emma
- Isabella
- Emily
- Madison
- Ava
- Olivia
- Sophia
- Abigail
- Elizabeth
- Chloe
Boys:
- Jacob
- Michael
- Ethan
- Joshua
- Daniel
- Alexander
- Anthony
- William
- Christopher
- Matthew
Gender-neutral names took a backseat for the early part of the decade, but saw a resurgence in 2009. The trend hasn’t been popular since the ’80s. Giving this fad the official celebrity stamping was none other than supermodel Heidi Klum, who named her daughter (with singer Seal) Lou.

There are (including me) about 10 people (male and female) in my high school named Jordan! My parents thought they were being creative in 1993.... I guess not...
