Yes, you read that correctly, and no, there's no catch.

Department stores in the US are being forced to give away $175 million worth of free makeup, fragrance and beauty products beginning Tuesday January 20th

Anybody who walks into major retailers such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Saks or Macy's can receive one free beauty item.  And we're talking major lines, such as Chanel, Clinique, Guerlain and Lancôme, to name just a few.

The news has spread like wildfire between friends, online and by word of mouth, resulting in massive line-ups at department stores.  But the process is relatively quick; line up, sign a waiver, and then decide what you'd like from what's available.  Even with line-ups out the door, women were reporting that the process only took about 5 minutes.

Because of a major lawsuit filed against major department stores in California in 2003 (it seems some of the big name stores were purposely holding back inventory to up the price of high end beauty products), everybody is getting paid back in a major way next week.

I often visited the MAC kiosk in Nordstom's at Park Meadow Mall in Denver. I got to know the manager that had previously done celebrety makeovers. He was very interested in doing me as a demonstration for his staff. I came in as a boy and sat down on a stool. At first it drew the attention of people passing by. When he put on the wig, the attention subsided. I went into a dressing room and put on this dress and went about my shopping. A great group of people!

I am driving down with friends to the closest department store across the border on Tuesday night after work - hopefully there are still some things left!  It seems like nobody really believes this story, I haven't seen much hype about it anywhere.  But that's a good thing for the rest of us ;)

I had planned to pick up my free product yesterday. I gave up when the line went halfway through the store, out the door and wrapped around one aisle in the garage with security present (my photo is in the slideshow).  I figured it just wasn't worth the hour+ wait for  one sample-sized or even deluxe sample-sized sized product (and yes, it was just product).  At least half the products at Macy's where I was, was already sold out according to one of the line guys.

My girlfriend went with her mom and hit up both a Nordstrom and a Neiman's and were quite happy with their products (one was a full-sized lotion).  She said the line at Nordie's was only about 30 minutes and that there wasn't any line at Neiman's.  Judging from some lines yesterday though, I'm sure most if not all the product is now long gone.

Yeah I was tempted to travel down to Bellis Fair from Vancouver, but took a closer look at the list and most of the products are lotions and small bottles of perfume - both of which I have more than enough of.  Would have been tempting if more makeup had been offered.
