A Portuguese craftsman has created a homage to one of the world's favourite scooters, made entirely from laminated hardwood - well, with the exception of the metal engine parts. Carlos Alberto, a craftsman who usually specialises in furniture and staircases, fashioned the wooden Vespa from steam bent and laminated veneers.

The scooter and biking fraternity is, not surprisingly, impressed.

"Its incredible attention to detail should work wonders as a rolling advertisement. While the scooter does ride, we're guess the experienced is somewhat heavier and more flexible than standard. Still, this is a seriously impressive project," said HellforLeather.

While Armadillo Scooterwear boss Tim added, "I think most people would agree that the results are pretty eye-catching, although - thankfully for scooterwear sellers - wooden clothing and helmets seems to be out of the question for the time being."

Dennis at DealerNews was similarly impressed: "Every once in a while, greatness shines down upon us little people and today that greatness is Carlos Alberto. When you can make things like this with your bare hands you should be allowed to walk around wearing a crown, a cape and a monocle."

You can look at the Vespa in all its glory on Carlos' website, including pics showing the wooden Vespa being made.

That's a good looking vespa.  Is wood safer in any way?
