Web 2.0 Halloween Costumes, Happy HalloMeme!
Halloween 2008 is nearly upon us, but if you're a web 2.0 creative genius type then throwing on a dated Dracula costume is so beneath you. The NowPublic.com editorial staff compiled a few of our favourite internet memes that would make great costume ideas - and by great we mean the nerdy kind that you have to repeatedly explain to your web-impaired friends who probably won't ever get it anyway.
Most of these are ideal last minute halloween costumes and can be homemade:
Sad Trombone - It doesn't take much to master this little ditty, and you can wear whatever you want. Super bonus points if you actually have a trombone and can play it.
LOLcat - Dress like a cute little kitty and slap a grammatically diseased caption on your chest and you're good to go. Use this lolcat tranzlator 2 lern 2 speek liek lolcat, and have a happeh Halloween.
Twitter fail whale - attach some fake birds (buy at most craft stores) to the ends of pipe cleaners, affix to your shoulders, and you're saved.
Facebook profile - easy. Related: go as a SUPERPOKE!
Youtube video - same deal as above, it's amazing what you can do with cardboard. Bonus points here on comments - you should start it off with one or two ("Ur Halloween costume suckz") but let the party goers fill in the rest of the comments. You supply the sharpie.
Mac vs. PC - you'll need a friend for this one. Related: go as Steve Jobs.
Rick Roll - dress up as Rick Astley, randomly play "Never Gonna Give You Up" from an old school ghettoblaster (points for surprise audio attacks, obviously), and master every choreographed dance move in that video.
White screen of death - this is a phrase we've been throwing around the NP offices fairly often lately, usually in conjunction with vulgar cursing and raised fists. The white screen of death. The WSOD. White paper works.
Anonymous commenter - wear nondescript clothing, a mask, and say really mean things to people. Tell no one your name. Consider attending party with Youtube video guy.
A music mash up - Think half Ringo Starr, half Jay Z. Or whatever.
Rick Sanchez - with laptop, reading twitter feeds. You'll bore your friends to sweet salty tears.
Any one of the internet all-stars from recent years - lonelygirl15, Tay Zonday aka "Chocolate rain" guy, Ms. South Carolina, Chris Crocker, Evil look baby, Star Wars kid, Gunter, Back Dorm Boys, Evolution of Dance guy (tough, but if you pull it off you'll be a star), or Numa Numa, to name but a few.
Any other suggestions?
Have fun, internets!
