Why would you pay $50.00 for a California Pinot Noir so jammy that it hurts, I wondered last week after tasting one?
Are some of us treating small wine labels the same way that rabid music collectors treat their rare and obscure discoveries?

Your article should be expanded, but it does hint at an interesting issue: the relationship between wine price and the experience of wine drinking. This reuters article (http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSN1546333220080115) argues that "higher wine boosts drinking pleasure."
Moving to Bali from California came with it a shock. Good wine is hard to find...harder is good wine that hasn't been treated so poorly during the import that it is a mere shadow of it's former self. The cost of this possibly good wine? ridiculous. Sometimes...though...I just have to splurge...and hope for the best as I open the bottle!

This Tuscan classic is worth every penny. If you love wine, you should try it once. Brunello di Montalcino is not something you'll drink every day -- it's a special experience.

As always - buying good wine is depending on your knowledge and experience. When your're experienced (a long and - yes - expensive road) it's easier to find the undiscovered pearls. When your're a newbie, it's inevitable you pay too much sometimes. I found this Pouilly Fumé too expensive btw. :)
