A world beyond your office desk

the world awaits

Catching the travel bug is something that can’t be cured; an itch that can’t be scratched. Many of us dream of exploring every inch of the planet we live in, but for many it’s something we can only dream of at our office desks.
Adventure, excitement, travel, passion, friendship, love. These are some of the main ingredients for a happy, fulfilled life. But for three friends in Arizona, something in their lives is missing.
For the past year, three young men have been planning the trip of a lifetime – a way to find the adventure, excitement, and passion in life – they are planning a trip around the world.
Brendan Gibson, Joseph Wennerlund, and Scott Weymiller all live, work or study in Arizona, but feel that there’s more to life than commuting to work and school and spending their weekends hanging out with friends.
“We are looking to travel for six continuous years,” says Scott, “to experience new cultures in their true form.” Joseph explains that they plan to make a documentary of their travels. “We want to give to the world what we can.” They will live off whatever they have and not carry material possessions with them from place to place. Their documentary will hopefully give insight into what they experience and the trials and happiness they encounter on the journey.
Joseph describes the day when he realized he needed to go on this adventure. “One day a friend asked randomly, ‘name your top three achievements in life, go!’ and I drew a blank,” he says, “because I had no real achievements. It was at that point I realized that I have to go on this world tour.”
The three of them right now are working hard, and trying to raise as much money as they can, but they’re also reaching out for help. “We plan on raising money through donations,” says Joseph. “Currently we are accepting some donations through our website, which we are working on getting traffic to,” he says. They are also looking for sponsorship from companies and they really just want to spread the word as much as they can.
Brendan adds, “We are set to work hard, and do whatever we have to do to get this adventure rolling.”
They know that traveling for this amount of time will not be easy, but the rewards will be great. Scott acknowledges that the most difficult part of this adventure will be staying together. “People change and grow,” he says, “and we will be no different so I think it will be hard to stay focused together.” Brendan adds “missing friends and family” as a difficult point as well.
It is really now or never for these three young men. “If we wait,” says Joseph, “then we’ll get married, have kids, a career, and this won’t happen.”
This may seem like a really ambitious goal, and most people don’t want to be away from home for so long, but these guys are looking for the experience of a lifetime.
“Travelling is my main goal in life,” says Brendan, “I’m in a cubicle Monday to Friday, so I obviously just daydream for a giant chunk of my week.” The others agree. “I think we are all naïve enough to really go for this a hundred and ten percent,” says Scott.
While trying to raise the money is the biggest challenge they are facing at the moment is telling their plans to their parents. Joseph smiles, “When my mom finds out she won’t like it. She doesn’t like anything outside of Phoenix.”

wow - i'm a huge fan of travel, and would love to do a few months, even a year on the road - but that's a LONG time away from friends and family, not to mention lost time getting a career off the ground. there is plenty of opportunity in life to travel. i encourage a year, but 6 is just crazy!

amyjudd, I like this story.  Your story may spark a rush for people to get out of their cubicle, ask for money on the internet, and make a documentary as they travel the world.  Isn't that what most young people want to do before they marry and settle down?  I know I thought about it.  I wish them the best and will look for their movie and TV series.

Hey, Your kidding me.... You never mentioned travel??????

You wrecked the car I helped you buy and now your fleeing the country? It wasn't that bad.  Maybe a flat tire and a bent frame....  Call me... We can work this out.  Besides you know the dollar sucks overseas right now..........
