PARIS — Yves Saint Laurent, uno de los grandes diseñadores de moda franceses del siglo XX, falleció la noche del domingo en París, informó la Fundación Pierre Bergé-Saint Laurent.

Saint Laurent dio el poder a las mujeres, creando para ellas "un vestuario contemporáneo", con prendas masculinas como el traje sastre con pantalón y su célebre esmoquin, creado en 1966, años después de que Chanel las liberara.

Este príncipe de la moda, cuyo arte descansaba en su audacia, dijo adiós a la alta costura en 2002, tras 40 años de creación palpitante, porque "ya no se reconocía en esta profesión" y estaba agotado de las acrobacias financieras.

Nacido el 1 de agosto de 1936 en Orán (Argelia), Yves-Mathieu Saint-Laurent llegó con 17 años a París, donde empezó trazando diseños con los que logró llamar la atención de Christian Dior (1954), del que fue aventajado discípulo y su sucesor después de su inesperada muerte en 1957.

Su primer desfile, realizado en 1958, fue todo un éxito para el joven director artístico, que presentaba su colección "Trapecio", que rompió con las cinturas de avispa, muy populares por aquel entonces.

En 1960, sustituido en Dior por Marc Bohan, Yves Saint Laurent se asoció con Pierre Bergé para dar nacimiento a su propia firma. Juntos, el creador y el administrador, levantaron un imperio del lujo, con el que abarcó la alta costura, el pret-a-porter y los perfumes.

El emporio Yves Saint Laurent fue comprado en 1993 por el grupo industrial Elf-Sanofi, lo que sería el principio de su fin.

Treinta años antes, en 1962, Yves Saint Laurent había creado su primera colección bajo el logotipo YSL: tres letras negras sobre un fondo crema que se convirtieron en míticas. Cuatro años después democratizó el pret-a-porter con su primera 'boutique' parisina.
