A Supreme Court decision Wednesday to uphold a nationwide ban on a particular abortion procedure has met with praise from abortion opponents, while others say it is a step backward in upholding women's rights.

The Supreme Court first established a woman's right to an abortion in 1973. Wednesday's decision marks the first time justices have decided the U.S. Constitution permits a nationwide ban on a particular type of abortion.
Planned Parenthood denounced the decision, stating it "flies in the face of 30 years of Supreme Court precedent and the best interest of women's health and safety."
In 2003, Congress passed and President Bush signed into law the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.
The law would have violators face up to two years in federal prison but has never taken effect because of legal battles.
