NP Rank:
Surfs Up! Let's Water Board!
In war it is important to win the battle of words. I'm not talking about winning an argument. I'm talking about being able to define the terms of the debate. Karl Rove and the current administration is masterful in these rhetorical tactics. Recently Dick Cheney referred to the torturous practice of practically drowning a man as 'dunking' him in water:
WASHINGTON - The White House said Friday that Vice President
Dick Cheney was not talking about a torture technique known as "water boarding" when he said dunking terrorism suspects in water during questioning was a "no-brainer."
What Dick was referring to is now called 'water boarding'. Ah, 'water', the essence of life. And 'boarding', who doesn't love to snowboard, to catch a wave, to skate? Water boarding - all the kids are doing it. Such a pleasant phrase for such a heinous act. This is like calling a crucifixion 'high sticking' or the electric chair the 'electro couch'.
Dick, you are The President of Vice. You torture language as badly as you torture people.
