This is a story from the Guardian about housing being built in the UK that follows a sustainable model.  Houses are built from old tires and from the looks of it aluminum cans.  The resulting thermal mass helps regulate temperature with minimal heating and cooling, saving on energy consumption.  These techniques are actually thousands of years old (not the tire and can part, but the mass part), but are enjoying renewed attention as the general public becomes increasingly sensitive to issues of ecology and sustainability.
