Why do Democrats need a reference to an imaginary being?

The Democratic party platform has been changed to re-include a deity in it. My position, I detest the Dems being theocratic in anyway, but at least they aren't the party of pure theocracy that is the Republican party. A party with people like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum...
