June 6, 1944: D-Day Invasion and Normany Landings

Operation Overlord was the code-name for the Allied invasion of France during World War II. Over 9,000 Allied troops died in the effort, which gave over 100,000 British, Canadian, Free French and American troops a foothold in northwest Europe, landing on Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach, Gold Beach, and Utah Beach, and Pointe du Hoc.

During the planning of the operation, the projected time of landing on French soil was known as H-Hour, D-Day. (The H stands for "Hour" and the D stands for "Day")
