Israel completed its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip after announcing a ceasefire in a three-week campaign which it said was aimed at ending Palestinian rocket fire into Israel.

More than 1,200 Palestinians are reported to have been killed in the fighting. Thirteen Israelis were killed, including 10 soldiers. Tends of thousands of Palestinians have been left homeless, while hundreds of thousands remain without adequate water or electricity.
