Iran's presidential elections were held on June 12, 2009. The contest was seen as a referendum for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as his main rival Mir Hossein Mousavi re-emerged after 20 years out of the public eye. Mousavi was Prime Minister during the cultural revolution.

After Ahmadinejad declared his "landslide victory" on the weekend, protesters and pro-Mousavi voters took to the streets for consecutive days of public protests and rallies.

On Monday, despite an official ban on further public marches, a pro-Mousavi rally drew more than one hundred thousand supporters to the streets of Tehran. Reports on Monday indicated that the protests had turned violent, though there have been no official reports of injuries or deaths.
