Strongman Muammar Gaddafi was killed in Sirte on October 20, 2011. He had controlled Libya for 42 years, and had been tied to acts of terror abroad and brutality against his own people at home.
At issue now is how Gaddafi was killed. The National Transitional Council (NTC) claims that Muammar Gaddafi was killed in the crossfire as rebels fought with loyalists. However, initial claims suggested that Gaddafi was executed. The widely-circulated photo of the dictator's body clearly shows a bullet wound in the middle of his forehead. While few are mourning his death, the manner in which Gaddafi was killed will affect the bedrock of the NTC's legitimacy.
