After a massive salmonella outbreak across the United States which sickened over 600 people, peanut paste and peanut butter products were identified as the source of the widespread contamination. The Peanut Corporation of America manufactured the contaminated products, and numerous food recalls have been implemented as the scope of the situation continues to widen.
9 deaths have been associated with the salmonella outbreak, and consumers are being warned to cross-check all peanut butter products with the FDA's recall list. Doctors are noting that many people across the US have been reporting 'stomach flu' symptoms, though most of these cases are not cross-checked for salmonella - thus, the intensity of the outbreak may have been far greater than initially thought.
Salmonellosis causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, chills, vomiting and/or fever within 8 to 72 hours after consuming food contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonellosis can be life-threatening to those with weakened immune systems.
