A notoriously difficult crime to profile, school shootings have become a hotbed of debate in academic circles. The US Secret Service, through its National Threat Assessment Center, has gone on record as stating that the profiles that have been built to identify potential school shooters describe the vast majority of young adults, almost all of which will never go on a rampage killing.
In 1999 the Columbine massacre shocked the United States and the world and ushered in a new era of criminal analysts who claim to be able to prevent mass murders on school grounds. To date none of these techniques have been proven reliable.
