September 11th

September 11th, the anniversary of the devastating 9/11 suicide attacks on the United States.

On September 11, 2001 two hijacked planes were crashed into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York, 2,993 people died including the 19 terrorists who took part in the suicide attacks. A third hijacked plane hit the Pentagon and a fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, was taken down by heroic passengers, never making it to its intended target.

Since the September 11 attacks America has been at war in the Middle East, first entering Iraq and currently engaged in Afghanistan. The so called "War on Terror" in search of the coordinators of the 9/11 attacks was born on September 11 and the foundation for the domestic legislation known as the Patriot Act was laid. Osama bin Laden is now dead, but many questions still remain, including the possible connection between the 9/11 hijackers and the Saudi royal family.

In 2002, repairs to the Pentagon were completed and the Pentagon Memorial was unveiled. Another 9/11 memorial also sits in Shanksville to honor the passengers of United Flight 93. The "Freedom Tower" project is still underway at Ground Zero after ten years.
