September 11th, 2009, marks the eighth anniversary of the devastating 9/11 suicide attacks on the United States. On September 11, 2001 two hijacked planes were crashed into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York, 2,993 people died including the 19 terrorists who took part in the suicide attacks. A third hijacked plane hit the Pentagon and a fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, was taken down by heroic passengers, never making it to its intended target.
Since the September 11 attacks America has been at war in the Middle East, first entering Iraq and currently engaged in Afghanistan. The so called "War on Terror" in search of the coordinators of the 9/11 attacks was born on September 11 and the foundation for the domestic legislation known as the Patriot Act was laid. Although Osama Bin-Laden and Al-Qaeda have claimed responsibility for the 9/11 attacks, they have yet to be brought to justice for the crime, while suspected terrorists in the USA, who may or may not have played a role in 9/11, have been arrested and held under the Patriot Act.
In 2002 repairs to the Pentagon were completed and the Pentagon Memorial was unveiled. Another 9/11 memorial also sits in Shanksville to honor those who fought back, the passengers of Flight 93. The final memorial at Ground Zero in NYC will be unveiled in 2011, a decade after the attacks.
