Human sexuality plays a major role in everyone's life. It can be understood in terms of biology and physiology, sociology, psychology, and/or philosophy. It covers gender identity (a person's sense of identification as male, female, both, or neither), sexual orientation (asexual, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and pan-sexual) and actual practices, including spiritual practices.
Philosophically, human sexuality encompasses the moral, ethical, theological, spiritual or religious aspects.
Sociologically, human sexuality often encompasses cultural, political and legal aspects. Religious and political movements have tried to influence or control changes in sexual practices, including marriage. NowPublic is currently tracking the public's response to California's Proposition 8 (an initiative seeking to ban same-sex marriage in California), and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
