Thailand's Political Unrest

Thailand was struck by a political crisis that virtually paralyzed the government; the situation came to an end on December 1 2008 when a Thai court removed unpopular Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

The crisis began in August when supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy stormed Bangkok's main government compound and barricaded themselves inside. In late November armed protesters seized the two major international airports in Bangkok and took control of Thailand's major airways.

On December 1 the protesters ended their occupation of the international airport after the high court ruling ousted Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat from power. However, in April 2009 protesters backing ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra took to the streets against current Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as the military moves to confront them, and the ASEAN conference was disrupted.
