Thanksgiving is a traditional "day of harvest" celebration in North America. In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Sunday in October; in the US it is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November. American folklore has the first Thanksgiving occurring in 1612 at the Plymouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but most historians recognize that the first American Thanksgiving celebration actually happened on September 8th 1569 in St. Augustine, Florida. This year US Thanksgiving is on November 27th.
The traditional Thanksgiving feast centers around a roast turkey. According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) over 50 million turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving, prompting the group to show people how to have a vegetarian and cruelty-free Thanksgiving.
In reaction to those who object to the turkey tradition it has become a public relations event for politicians throughout North America to pardon a condemned turkey at Thanksgiving. This year defeated Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin made headlines when she pardoned "Tom Turkey" and gave an interview to the press while other turkeys were killed in the background.
