Sparked by the death of father-of-four Mark Duggan at the hands of London police, rioting broke out at first throughout the capital, and then across England. While ostensibly political (pundits mused on the role of disenfranchised youth, racism, police brutality, and government austerity measures), most of the rioting involved opportunistic looting.

The aftermath of the England riots is both an opportunity and a pitfall for British society: will communities be able to heal and work together, as demonstrated by the Broomstick Brigade, or will the British government lean even harder on the populace, as evidenced already by the heavy sentencing of Nicolas Robinson for a $6 theft, and the push by Downing Street to gain control of social networking transactions in the UK?
