Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 when people celebrate their love and affection for one another with gifts, cards, flowers and other romantic gestures. Love notes, or "valentines," are often exchanged between friends and partners, often adorned with popular imagery including hearts, doves, and Cupid with his bow and arrow.

Cupid is the Roman god of erotic love and beauty and has become an icon for Valentine's Day. He shoots his bow to inspire romantic love between people.

In the West, pressure to wow your partner with lavish gifts and romance has largely superseded real tokens of love and respect, as ads and marketing emphasize the 'need' to spend in order to impress your mate. The average consumer spends about $120 on the holiday, though men generally spend about twice as much on gifts for women.
