On 28 November 2008, a 34-year old male Wal-Mart employee died after being trampled to death by a stampede of customers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the Long Island, NY store early Friday morning, seeking discount items as part of a "Black Friday" sale.

On March 16 Wal-Mart became victim to a murder scandal again, only this one was a hoax. Text messages began to circulate across North America claiming a gang initiation shooting would happen at a local Wal-Mart store. The shooting claims were a hoax and part of a well known urban legend.

Three other people were injured in the crush.
