Electric cars use electric motors instead of an internal combustion engine, and are seen by some as offering a step away from oil-dependent transportation. A variety of electric cars are in development around the world and some have been rolled out in countries including Canada and the US.
Hawaii has become the first US state to roll out electric car stations statewide in an attempt to wean itself off fossil fuels. Car recharging stations and recharged batteries will be provided by the California-based company Better Place.
