10 States In Financial Crisis
In a chilling new report The Pew Center for the States says there are Nine States besides California which are in deep financial crisis.
The other Nine in no particular order are
- Michigan
- Rhode Island
- New Jersey
- Florida
- Illinois
- Wisconsin
- Arizona
- Nevada
- Oregon
The Pew Report says together the 10 States account for "more than one-third of the U.S. population and economic output" and could have "potentially damaging consequences" for the United States economy as a whole.
The report divides the states in those severely hit by the housing bubble -California, Arizona, Nevada, and Fordia, the Midwest states of Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, and the Northeaster states of New Jersey and Rhode Island.
Though each state may have it unique problems - housing market crash, manufacturing in decline - the combined impact is troubling according to the Pew Report.
"While California often takes the spotlight, other states are facing hardships just as daunting," said Susan Urahn, managing director of the Washington, D.C.-based Pew center. "Decisions these states make as they try to navigate the recession will play a role in how quickly the entire nation recovers."
The Pew Report does not bill itself as a comprehensive analysis of the total health of states that were studied, rather it is analysis during important times over several fiscal quarters.
"The 10 states are hardly the only ones at risk in this time of record-setting revenue drops, high unemployment and far-flung fallout from the housing bust and credit crisis. Virtually all states have been stressed by the downturn," Urahn said. "We expect that when state lawmakers next spring turn to crafting their new budgets for 2011, many will confront an even tougher set of challenges. States already have made significant cuts, revenues continue to drop, and stimulus funds will be running out. "

I agree that not only is the war costing hudreds of young lives, but costing billions daily that we don't have. When will we as a nation realize that this is a fruitless war and get our troops out. Let's protect our soldiers and economy and end this war NOW.

I was born and raised in MA and received my Master's degree here. This state is in the red! We are overtaxed, the Big Dig did nothing to help traffic congestion in Boston, but put us billions under water, we have lime diseased ticks everywhere (1 out of every 4 people in MA get lime!), our housing bubble has YET to burst completely and ignorant people out here still pay up to 5 times thier salaries for homes = totally housepoor, everyone is stressed and aggravated, cloud cover has increased and generally the weather sucks. Soooo, I am moving out of this state to get a better job, buy a cheaper house and live an easier existance. Bottom line - Massachusetts sucks and should be on the list.

Most states are in the same boat....becareful where you land. The states where housing is cheaper doesn't seem to have any jobs and companies are closing fast. Good luck and PS......IL is the pits for work, weather, government spending on roads that are ALWAYS under construction and never have enough to fund. Last 3 of 4 Governors are in legal trouble....yep, stay far away!

I think they need to start looking at all the politicians that are passing some of this stuff through. Eliminate the lifetime pensions for the government and their spouses. Most spouses only get 1 year after their pension earned spouse passes away....why don't they have to deal with the same struggle as the people they are passing laws for? Government is getting in 2010 2% increase and people on Medicare are getting no increase in benefits but increase in cost AND those that are still blessed to have kept their jobs and are working all seem to be getting no increase IF they aren't getting a reduction. There's something wrong with this system.
