4Chan Down: DDoS Attack Brings 4Chan Down
The snarky, sneaky and sometime notorious website 4Chan is down. The 4Chan outage occurred at 2:39 a.m. PST according to 4Chan site administrator, Moot. The 4Chan Twitter feed is carrying this announcement.
Site temporarily unavailable due to DDoS -or- we figured @MasterCard, @PayPal, and #Visa were lonely.
The 4Chan outage comes in the wake of recent attacks against the websites of various financial institutions mentioned in the 4Chan Tweet, and the Bank of America. An informal group connected with 4Chan, known as Anonymous is believed to be behind some of those attacks.
The 4chan status page lists several parts of the site as being up, but "Boards", "Post images" and "Static files" are all listed as down and the site barely loads after a minute or two. Even this, however, is changing over time with the intensity of the attacks.
The question now is Who is behind the DDoS attacks on 4Chan? Let the speculation begin? 4Chan itself is playing a clever joke, Bank of America? the CIA?
Yesterday, Internet vigilante group Anonymous, which has loose ties with some 4chan forumers, launched a DDoS attack against Bank of America’s website, an act of retaliation which they said came in response to Bank of America’s refusal to process payments or donations to WikiLeaks.
Placing bets on which group could be behind this. Banks that cut off WikiLeaks’ funding and were hit with DDoSes this past month retaliating themselves? Tumblr kids who still take the 4chan/Tumblr war seriously? 4chan?

(It's worth pointing out that /b/, which generates all the headlines for 4chan, is but one part of a massive and diverse user base)
