600,000 Council Workers Vote to Strike - Summer of Chaos Looms

As the credit crunch bites deeper and Gordon Brown asks for wage retraint the threat of widspread disruption to life in Britain over the summer months comes a step nearer.

Council workers today voted in favour of walkouts in a dispute over pay, beginning a summer of discontent in Britain.

Members of Unison in England, Wales and Northern Ireland voted by 55 per cent to take industrial action after rejecting a 2.45 per cent pay offer.

The union's negotiators will decide tomorrow what action to recommend to the national strike committee later this week.
