As the credit crunch bites deeper and Gordon Brown asks for wage retraint the threat of widspread disruption to life in Britain over the summer months comes a step nearer.

Council workers today voted in favour of walkouts in a dispute over pay, beginning a summer of discontent in Britain.

Members of Unison in England, Wales and Northern Ireland voted by 55 per cent to take industrial action after rejecting a 2.45 per cent pay offer.

The union's negotiators will decide tomorrow what action to recommend to the national strike committee later this week.
