A recent study shows some surprising facets of social networking usage. Most adult users engage sites like Facebook or MySpace in order to find old friends, rather than to make new ones.

Social networking has blossomed among adults (18 and up), shooting from 8% in 2005 to 35% in early 2009.

Yet the younger the adult, the greater the likelihood of social network use. A total of 75% of online adults aged 18 to 24 have a social network profile, in contrast to 57% of 25- to 34-year-olds and merely 7% of those aged 65 and older. Overall usage statistics were about the same for men and women.

Also according to the survey, use of MySpace is still most prevalent on the whole, with 50% of adult social network users maintaining profiles on that site, as opposed to 22% for Facebook and 6% for LinkedIn.

I expected LinkedIn usage to be far higher, and MySpace usage to be a bit lower.

Interesting. Not especially surprising to me. I generally use social networking to connect with existing friends or old friends I've not heard from in some time (old school mates, etc.). I'm in the 25-30 age range. Dang, I'm gettin' old. =oP Kidding mostly!

For some reason, I'm starting to prefer Facebook over MySpace. Feels a bit more professional and slick, with less 'clutter' and annoying profile themes and teenyboppers. Go figure. MySpace has its uses, though, I suppose. A lot of my friends still use MS more frequently that FB.

The photo here I like to call "The Passtime of Champions!" I, like most people, started out with a MySpace profile, when Facebook came along, I found it to be less, shall we say, crowded and flashy than MySpace.

Facebook focuses on what's important, communication. The interface is slick and easy to peruse, in no way competing with daily status, link posts, photos, etc. It's nice to get a daily glimpse into what your friends, both near and far, are up to. It's a dream for those of us who are not so great with the letter writing and phone calls. Plus, there are plenty of fun applications to take up your time, should you choose to go that route.

Also, I'd like to add to the demographic statistics in the article, I'm in the 35-64 age range (being 40) with the majority of my friends hovering around that age range as well. My father, 71, just created a profile so he can get that daily glimpse from his kids, all of whom are on Facebook! Our times are truly amazing, it's getting harder to recall life without cyberspace. :)
