Earlier reports that CPU manufacturer AMD will be laying off 500 employees turned out to be incorrect... AMD is actually terminating 600 employees.
Yesterday, the company informed the US Securities and Exchange Commission that the 500 number being eliminated starting with this fiscal quarter would actually be higher by 100.

Wow that's a lot of very skilled unemployed people. It'll be very difficult for them to find similar jobs right now.

Interesting time working at ATI during the AMD take-over. Sad to hear about more layoffs.

We can probably expect more of the same from other companies within the tech industry, and even other industries as the global economic recession hits its stride.
A pity really, as a lot of competent people are without work.
My sympathies to them.
