Well, that was fast. The Google Android-powered G1 has been jailbroken. It wasn't locked down as jealously as the iPhone, but it was locked down nonetheless. "Locked down" in the past tense, that is...

It's been less than two weeks since T-Mobile's G1 hit shelves, and Android's already been jailbroken.
Modmygphone has the whole how-to; it's an 8-step process done via the command line. If you're looking for a point-and-click interface, then that will take a bit more time...

Remember, this is the first baby steps to jailbreaking the G1. When the iPhone was initially jailbroken, everything was incredibly dull and tedious to do - all via command line, etc. Heck, when iPhuc came out it was a huge breakthrough, and there was still nothing close to a GUI app. Look for huge steps to be taken soon in making this easier for the average Joe Six Pack.
G-pwn. There. Someone had to say it.

Update... they fought the law, and the law won:

However, don't get too excited, as a firmware update named RC30 is already being pushed out as an OTAupdate. This update removes the back-door exploit that allowed users to gain root access.
I wouldn't consider this the end of the story, though...

And so the cat and mouse game begins. I think the decision to release the unlocked Android G1 dev phone was a good move, but there's always going to be consumers who'll not like the idea of being tied to a network. I think i'd rather just learn to live with T-Mobile rather than risk bricking a new G1 though!
