Apple apologies for its 'baby shaker' iphone application

Apple has apologised for a "deeply offensive" iPhone application called Baby Shaker, which made a game of quieting crying babies by shaking them. It removed the $0.99 (£0.59) game from its iTunes Store on Wednesday, two days after it went on sale. It sparked outrage from children's groups and brain injury foundations.

In the name of ALL THE GODS, who ever thought this would be a good idea?! We surely live in a world gone mad. Apparently, you shake the 'baby' until it stops crying. As an added bonus, you get two big Xs over the baby's eyes. Again, who thought this would be a good idea?!

The 99-cent game, which showed black-and-white line drawings of a baby, had the description: "On a plane, on the bus, in a theatre. Babies are everywhere you don't want them to be! They're always distracting you from preparing for that big presentation at work with their incessant crying. Before Baby Shaker, there was nothing you could do about it. See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!"Shaking the motion-sensitive phone meant that the onscreen baby would get large red Xs over its eyes.

US-based organisations which seek to prevent brain injuries from Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) - including the National Centre on Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation - condemned Apple for approving the game's sale. Jetta Bernier, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Children, said: "I am disheartened that with this new application Apple is encouraging frustrated adults to shake infants, not only to end their crying, but to end their lives. "There are many effective infant soothing strategies that adults can use to calm their fussy, crying babies. Shaking is not one of them," the Daily Telegraph reported her as saying.
Edit: in case you miss it in the comments, see yesterday's story by Jordan about how Apple pulled the app yesterday.

Thanks for posting. Here's an earlier story by Jordan about how Apple pulled the app yesterday. Just as well they have now apologised - seems like a PR nightmare.

Oh I didn't see that (and I checked too!). Do you want me to delete this one, Rachel?

No - it's fine - this story is about the apology, which was not reported yesterday.

Ah ok, cool.

And you're right. PR nightmare. And deservedly so, I have to say!

Agreed, Amy. It's so sick indeed. I'm glad they're getting flak about this - absolutely deserved. Thanks for the recommendation and comment.

I dont get it. Someone actually thought this would be a good idea? I think its pretty obvious people wont approve of it.

this reminds me of the kindergarten shooting game. Bizarre.

Yes, someone actually thought this would be a good idea. Or at least, I assume so. Mind-boggling.

Pretending to shake babies is funny?

@JeffHuang: What do you think about the other ideas. Games about invading other countries and killing people in different forms are ok, but this one is not. The entire pop culture is filled with violenc. What I don't get is the whole pop culture.

You made a good point. Thats just the way our culture is. Some things we are "ok" with while others are not when they are similar.

But I hope you agree with me that shaking a baby is not appropriate in any culture.

Absolutely.

sickening.

I don't understand why you people think you have the right to judge. Let the developers make whatever they feel like making. Anyone who takes the game seriously enough to go shaking real babies afterward is dumb enough to get themselves in trouble no matter what. I don't think this game is worth buying, but I can't stand how politically correct and offended everyone gets every time someone makes a joke that is even just slightly offensive and stupid.
