Nook, Kindle, Sony readers compared: Holiday e-book picks

Barnes and Noble's popular e-book reader, the Nook, is already sold out for the 2009 holiday season. Buyers can place themselves on a waiting list for a Nook available in the New Year, but it is out of stock for the remainder of 2009. The Nook is an electronic book reader developed on an Android platform that is WiFi compatible. Users can essentially read books on the go through the sleek device.

This isn't the first time that an e-reader has entirely sold out of product before the holiday season has even properly begun. Last year, another e-book reader called the Amazon Kindle also sold out before the holidays. E-book readers seem to be all the rage these days with their appealing ability to contain several books all in one electronic device.

"The hottest holiday gift is out of stock," a message at the top of the page reads. "Order the Nook today to be first in line for the new year."

E-readers have gained extreme popularity within the last year. It is expected that around 1 million devices will be sold this holiday season. Black Friday is right around the corner too, and many e-book readers will likely be sold then.

It remains unclear whether the Nook has sold out prior to the holidays due to its amazing functionality or whether the device was simply in short supply via Barnes & Noble. Either way, buyers will have to wait a few weeks to receive their Nooks in the New Year.

Holiday shoppers looking for an alternative for gift giving can still purchase the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader which are the Nook's current competitors. Orders placed for a Nook within the next week or so are expected to arrive around the first week of January.
