Bell is cutting 2,500 management jobs to reduce costs, said telecom giant BCE on Monday.

The timing of this is interesting, as the spectrum auction for cell phone providers ended just last week, with a number of independents looking to gear up against Bell and its other major competitors.

Also, someone pointed out in the CBC comments that by their math, management titles make up 40 per cent of the overall staff at Bell. That is a *lot* of managers!

Apparently these management cuts are included in the 30 per cent staff reduction announced July 11.

So Bell is cutting 2500 management jobs, or 15% of all managers.

This is about 6% of their total workforce.

Some simple math suggests that this means 40% of their workforce is management.

Who the hell needs 4 managers for every 6 employees? That's absurd by any measure. No wonder they're gouging us with all their fees.

The job cuts, together with earlier cost-lowering moves, are expected to help Bell save about $300 million annually.

"It is always difficult to see colleagues depart, but these changes are absolutely necessary," George Cope, the president and CEO of BCE and Bell Canada, said in a release.

"We are moving forward with a streamlined management structure that brings everyone at Bell closer to the customer and allows us to compete more effectively. This new structure positions us as a far more efficient and cost-effective operator in the intensely competitive Canadian communications marketplace."
