Bill Gates Joins Twitter, Gets Over 220,000 Followers In 24 Hrs
Former chief of Microsoft Bill Gates joins Twitter, pumps followers by the thousand, causing Twitter to go over capacity?
Hallelujah! Bill Gates is now on Twitter. Microsoft founder Bill Gates joined the ever-growing micro-blogging platform Twitter that lets users communicate via 140-character messages. Hundreds of celebrities and politicians have been joining Twitter lately -- either looking for that extra cheap promotion or as a way to take charge of their own publicity. It the case of Bill Gates, it seems he is in it to promote his charities and foundations. He has only squeezed out five Tweets so far, but all of them have to do with Haiti earthquake.
It has now been less than 24 hours since Bill Gates got Twitter, but his follower count is already at a whopping 223,795. Bates got a special welcome from actor and proclaimed "King of Twitter" Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk). Gates said, "I've got a lot to learn about Twitter but look forward to sharing more."
Of course, everyone was really curious about who got the "honour" of being followed back by Bill Gates. Among the chosen few were American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, actress Ashley Tisdale, journalist George Stephanopoloulos, Jordan's Queen Rania and President Barack Obama (d'oh, he does not Tweet). Now, it is obvious what news outlets Gates consults to get his daily news -- Gates followed HuffingtonPost and the New York Times.
Interestingly, some people were speculating if Gates's new account had anything to do with Twitter going over capacity this morning. A similar scenario took place when talk show diva Oprah Winfrey joined Twitter. Others are saying it was not Gates, but news of the new earthquake in Haiti that set Twitter on fire this AM.
