Billy Graham Organization Lays Off 55 Staff
Though recession years are big for churches in terms of attendance, such organizations have bills to pay, and are therefore not immune to shrinking cash flow. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Organization is now in this position, and is laying off 55 employees, which is 10% of its staff.
Most of the redundancies will come from ancillary services, and a spokesman said that the cuts will not affect the group’s evangelistic ministry. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the organisation employs over 500 staff. An estimated 55 people will lose their jobs.
The layoffs and other cost-cutting measures are expected to reduce the annual budget by about 15 percent, to $84 million. The organization said that book sales are down and contributions have been "flat."
