Boeing will cut around 800 jobs from its defense unit operations facility in Kansas, which equates to 1/4 of its staff at that location.

Check out Scan in the Layoffs channel for the latest microblog updates.

The layoffs will affect managers and salaried and hourly workers. Boeing will send out layoff notices to about 76 employees on Friday.
(i.e. today)

More layoffs are expected in the coming year, according to a memo circulated throughout the company.

In the memo, Senior Vice President of Human Resources Rick Stephens says the employment decline could exceed Boeing's average annual attrition rate of 4 to 5 percent, and that it will include a mix of attrition, hiring freezes and layoffs.

Hello Amy:  I'm one of the old guard photographers from the 1960s and 70s when I used to have press credentials for the Reno Air Races each year.  I'm trying to get back into it and need to demonstrate to the Reno folks in charge that I'm an active photographer who publishes. I've just authorized use of one of my shots for a Now Public article and I'd like to be able to follow up to show that it got published.  Would you be able to help me in that regard?

Thanks,  -Pete  (aka 'papa sierra' on Flickr)

All I would like to say, is that Boeing is an a company with an awesome history, and the only way it will have a future is becuase of the people that work there.

How sad to see a true World brand which is renowned for quality and reliability suffer in these difficult times.  My heart go's out to the dedicated and highly skilled people who are facing an uncertain future.  Maybe Mr Obama will look on this like the automotive industry and perhaps offer some help?
