Breathalyzer: Getting to Know It
Breathalyzer test is a simple method of determining the person’s blood alcohol content through breathing to a breathalyzer device. When you called to pull over and take the test, then do not hesitate because this will surely get you to a more serious problem. This test is to ensure that the driver is not under the influence of alcohol and cannot cause accidents on the road.
Breathalyzers are the most common alcohol testing devices. Though there are other ways in determining the blood alcohol content, breathalyzers are the fastest and have accurate readings. This device was invented 1954 by Dr. Robert Borkenstein. Breathalyzers have a chemical mixture that reacts and changes in color when there is alcohol. Nowadays, there are different types of breathalyzers used in different scenes and circumstances. There are now breathalyzers for personal and professional use. This device undergoes regular check- ups and calibration to give correct and accurate readings.
Legally, the acceptable limit in most states for blood alcohol level is 0.08%. Other states have a higher limit which is 0.10%. But other medical associations have argued that even that those limits are too high. It has been known to medical professionals that your body cannot function well even if your blood alcohol content is 0.05%. So if your body has a 0.08% alcohol level, this means that 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100ml of your blood. If you are tested and you are over the legal limit, then you are charged with driving under the influence (DUI), driving while intoxicated (DWI) and operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI). In turn, this will demand you to pay fines, attend an alcohol awareness course, do community service and taking away your driver’s license.
When in court, breathalyzer results can be questioned because there are times that inaccuracy and false readings happen. Most common sources of errors in breathalyzer tests are false calibration, temperature, interfering compounds, electric interference and mouth alcohol. That is why law enforcements are very careful in administering this test. They are also trained to know factors that can result to these inaccuracies. These days, breathalyzers are very sensitive to alcohol and can differentiate ethanol from other forms of alcohol. So this device is not only accurate but smart as well.
It has been believed by many that onions, peppers, breath mints, mouthwash and pennies can hide the alcohol in your breath. Well, this is just a myth. This is a scientific device that gives result scientifically. Alcohol is not ingested to your body but rather absorbed by the membranes in your mouth, stomach, throat and intestines. So the alcohol in your body can last up to two hours.
Breathalyzer test like any other tests is quite terrifying. Even if you did not drink, it is still possible that you can be found with traces of alcohol in your body due to some internal activities. But as a good citizen, you must follow the orders of the law enforcements because if you are truly innocent then eventually it will be proven. This test is to secure and protect you from possible accidents in the road caused by drunk drivers. So be a responsible citizen and do not drink and drive.
