Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Enters Guinness Records Book
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Guinness Book of World Records
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has officially become an entry in the latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. Modern Warfare 2 has gained the record of the "most successful entertainment launch ever", no small feat on a platform that was considered a 'geeky hobby' only a little over a decade ago.
The company announced the latest shooter from Infinity Ward now holds the record for having "the most successful entertainment launch of all time" when it released last November. Verified first-day sales totaled more than $401.6 million worldwide, surpassing the previous record holder Grand Theft Auto IV from developer Rockstar Games.
The $401.6 million dollar first-day numbers are impressive on their own, but when compared to other forms of entertainment, the number is staggering. The biggest opening weekend for a movie belongs to The Dark Knight, which opened with $158.4 million dollars, and that is a 3-day take! The biggest opening day for movies belongs to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which raked in $72.7 million dollars.

MW2 knocked out Grand Theft Auto IV, which held the previous record with a $310 million dollar gross in its first day in 2008. Halo 3 ranks third with a $170 million dollar opening.
Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition Editor, Gaz Deaves, says that the record goes to show just how big a player video games are in the entertainment industr, calling video game launches cultural events.
MW2's first expansion 'stimulus package' sold more than 2.5 million downloads on its first day, proving once again how popular the Call of Duty brand is.
