Canada Post Raising Rates on Monday

Canada Post has raised it's rates, effective Monday. The 100% price increase of thick envelopes is drawing criticism from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, which says it opposes "arbitrary price increases" for what it calls undependable service.

The cost of mailing a first-class letter within Canada will increase to 54 cents from 52. Letters to the United States increase by two cents to 98 cents, while letters to all other foreign countries rise by a nickel to $1.65.
The Crown corporation also plans to cash in on online shopping with a 100 per cent increase in postal rates for thick envelopes that are widely used to ship Internet purchases. Packages weighing between 200 grams and 500 grams will jump to $5.50 from $2.25.

Ah yes, what a perfect economic time to raise postal rates — especially notable given the 100% increase on larger envelopes and packages. Highly suspect.

The US also raised rates but not this much.

It seems like the rates go up so often, it's hard to keep track. And how can you, when they don't even put the amount in the corner anymore?

Large envelopes ... insane! They really are going after the online shoppers, but they'll be losing out, cause we'll (includes me) buy from the US, it's cheaper. Hmph!

Apparently Canada Post is not familiar with the phrase "You get what you pay for."

In any other industry, having to pay 'top dollar' for a product or service ensures a higher quality product or enhanced level of service. For all their rate increases, the Canada Post service has never improved; in truth (in my experience) the quality of service has declined.

They keep claiming "lost revenue"owing to more inet usage. Puleez… before (where I would only occasionally purchase stamps) I now regularly have purchases I made on-line shipped to myself at a very high price. I fully believe the inet has always made them more money; and not less as they claim.
