When United States President Barack Obama visits Ottawa on Thursday morning, Feb. 19, the economy, trade, energy, the environment, and the war in Afghanistan will dominate his talks with Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

It is unclear how many among the Canadian public outside of the press pool will be able to see the President during his brief visit to Canada.

Reporters from across the country have been calling the Parliamentary Press Gallery trying to get a seat at the four-question news conference he will share with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

But there are just 40 spots for Canadian journalists and 40 for the U.S. contingent of 70 or 80 reporters who will arrive with Mr. Obama.

And police expect thousands of Obama watchers will arrive on the Hill for their “glimpse” of him.

Apparently, the Canadian public has opted to communicate with President Obama on a website launched by the Rideau Institute last week:  welcomeobama.ca.  What is Your message For Barack Obama When He comes to Canada on Feb. 19th?

Canadians are invited to submit videos and messages on any topic that they wish to discuss with the leader of the free world on this site.  It is fascinating from the perspective of an American that people outside of the United States are eager and excited to communicate their thoughts and ideas to President Obama, even though he is only visiting their country.

WelcomeObama.ca was launched by the Rideau Institute last Thursday, an Ottawa-based think tank with a mandate to incite discussion regarding international affairs. Its creators were inspired in part by the social networking roots of Mr. Obama's presidential campaign.

“We've seen him make extensive use of social media and these kinds of sites in the U.S. during his campaign to not only raise money, which is what a lot of people focus on, but to really engage people in the issues and to get a sense of where supporters are, what are people saying,” said Steven Staples, president of the Rideau Institute.

According to theglobeandmail.com, within hours of the launch of the welcomeobama.ca website, hundreds of messages flooded the site with opinions, suggestions, ideas, urgent requests, and more.

The website has several features that resemble the general approaches of the presidential campaign website of Mr. Obama in that it has the "Join Us for Change" column, which lists alphabetized categories that range from Afghanistan to Winnipeg -MB, and the "Invite Friends" column that has personalized greetings on a wide range of topics such as "The Ottawa Raging Grannies Welcome President Obama" and the energy advice, "A Clean Energy World", to name a few.

Topics addressed in the notes to Mr. Obama ranged from protectionism to a plea for the government's full disclosure of UFO sightings.

But according to Mr. Staples, in video or written format, French and English, most addressed one of three core issues: peace, environmental policies and economic reform.

The breadth and diversity of the missives have surprised and encouraged Mr. Staples.

“Hopefully Mr. Obama or his staff will connect with them, but at least Canadians will hear what their fellow Canadians are saying.”

It is certainly a wonderfully creative way for Canadians to welcome the President of the United States to their country.

Interesting. I think only lucky journalist from each side will be able to ask the question to President Obama. I think website idea is very cool. Good post.

Only pre-selected and thoroughly vetted journalists will be allowed.

That is an excellent initiative! I hope Obama gets to hear of it and that he sends them a message or something in recognition of this really good idea....

The web Idea is good in deed. I am not sure what Obama hopes to achieve though, Canada is faced with a minority Government and Harper was a great Bush supporter.

We shot some videos on behalf of Canadian Tourism with a similar concept as the site.  I've added them to this story, but here's the links too.

Hey Obama.  If you are reading this; stay in the US and work on your ecomony.  Now is not the time for photo ops with foreign leaders.

eastvanray, you obviously didn't get how eager BO and his family were to escape the White House and the Oval Office, ASAP and AMAP.

Maybe they never really wanted to live in the White man's House?

I doubt many will get to see him, but the fact that so many have sent him messages and want to be so involved is a good starting point.

I'm just glad the environment is on the agenda.

Yes.  The environment.  Like that bit of Canada's environment north of Nunavut that the US Government wants to take from us.

Thank you, Amy, for your comments and recommendation.  Environment is quite high on the agenda of the US-Canada meeting.

My piece is about how Canadians wish to convey their sentiments and messages to President Obama during his visit to Canada on Feb. 19.

It is understandable that invariably, there are different views and even ornery opinions about the United States and the American President inside and outside of the US; however, it is exceedingly disturbing and disappointing that some of the posters have used the opportunity to reveal their racially bias sentiments toward people of color in general, and in particular, the President of the United States, as evident in their comments.

The White House was built by enslaved African Americans should any of the posters care to read some US History before spewing racially bias comments.  The White House is also being referred to as the People's House as it aptly reflects the multi-ethnic and racial population of the United States.

May I suggest that these folks write their own pieces to discuss their sentiments about people of color rather than sullying a perfectly civilized conversation about a Canadian website to welcome the President of the United States.

Thank you, Cypresso, for your comment and recommendation.  It's a really nice website.

Given the history of those who founded the country and all of the House's previous inhabitants, one might believe the name was meant to denote who should live there.

Actually, the name had been the President's House, just like the President's House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

According to Whitehouse.org, the reference to the President's House as the White House was an informal term that kind of stuck.

White referred to the building's color.

Considering the state of both countries economy, would it not have been more fiscally responsible for Harper and his 5 man security team to go to Washington to visit Obama?

Considering Ottawa is on lockdown, sewer covers welded shut, snipers on rooftops and traffic cameras disabled in order to prevent terrorists from watching the parade route?

Considering the bill for this 6 hour meet and greet will be in the multi millions of dollars!

Maybe it is just me, but Harper visiting the states would have been a cheaper alternative, both security and dollar wise.  Just my really friggin valid opinion!

There was a street poll among Canadians who stated they preferred Obama over our Prime Minister Harper to run our country. Sort of premature I would think, but speaks volumes of Canadians who vote on style instead of substance, the man just took the position and has not really made concrete changes and put them into effect yet. Hence why we have splintered politicial parties as Canadians sometimes are like a cross between sheep and lemmings, willing to follow anyone on style even if it means their own demise. Once Canadians reach a precipe, then and only then do they show their displeasure at the elected leader they previously fawned over. It shows Canada and the US acceptance of anyone but Bush to run both our countries in leadership. I think this poll should have been conducted in a year to really see what Obama does for both our countries.

Welcome Mr. President.  Now go back home and let us get back to running our affairs.  You have more than enough work for yourself at home.  Thanks for droppin' by.

Obama will always be welcome in Canada if Obama deals with George W. Bush’s hate crimes.

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

Many people know what Bush did.

And many people will know what Bush did—even through the end of the world.

Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

“GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY” BLOG OF ANDREW YU-JEN WANG

I am not sure where I had read it before, but anyway, it is a linguistically excellent statement, and it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memory so it never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—off of the top of my head—I think the quotation came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.
