Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa. As the world gears up for the 2010 soccer world cup, we've been watching developments closely. Here are some pics of the impending Greenpoint stadium as well as the area of Greenpoint, and a general view of the city as seen from Signal Hill. The whole area is worthwhile to see from Signal Hill.

A stadium in Greenpoint! That's surreal.

It is....actually. The council entertained objections for more than a year before work commenced on the construction site. A fairly large area contained a golf course and small soccer stadium, the rest was left undeveloped, but not initially for such a huge object to be constructed there. The people form Greenpoint and surrounding areas complained bitterly, but eventually lost the battle against council. I am not even sure to what extend the new stadium will really be utilised after the world cup. The rugby players will probably remain at Newlands Rugby Stadium, which is in Newlands, and the Western Province rugby is so synonymous with Newlands that they will not easily move venues....so let's see what happens after the world cup next year.....

we know what will happen.
The stadium will be operated by Stade de France/SAIL, who will manage and maintain the venue while attracting concerts, events, exhibitions and sports events to the venue.
