Charlie Chaplin Google Video for April 16

Google is celebrating Charlie Chaplin's birthday with a special Google Doodle: a playable silent film. MIke Dutton stars as Charlie Chaplin, with the rest of the Google Doodle team appearing as the supporting cast. The video was shot in Niles, an area of Fremont, California, where Charlie Chaplin's classic The Tramp was filmed.

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, born in 1889, would have been 122. After moving to the US from England as a small child, Charlie Chaplin went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest producers and stars, and was able to maintain near-total creative control of his work. Chaplin was a co-founder of United Artists.

Targeted by Joseph McCarthy, Charlie Chaplin lived in Switzerland from 1952 onwards, returning only briefly to the US to receive an honorary Academy Award. Charlie Chaplin died on December 25, 1977 at age 88.

The Google blog has some behind-the-scenes photos from the Charlie Chaplin shoot. As for Charlie Chaplin's films, if you must choose only one, watch City Lights.

What an embarrassment! Couldn't they have shown at least a real clip of Chaplin instead of this google-employees-don't-we-think-we're-talented insult? (Of course, this is the same google that won't show a Christian image on their Christmas doodle.) A classic film clip like the one of Charlie rollerskating blindfolded along the edge of a two story shopping floor would win over thousands of new fans. Hasn't Google heard of YouTube??? We live in a time that lacks grace, style, and tradition, and nothing proves this more than that google clip that HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CHAPLIN! Bonne anniversaire, Charlot!!! Miss you more than you ever could have imagined!
