The 5th China International Event Festival (CIEF), jointly organized by the People’s Government of Chengdu and China Conference & Exhibition (CCE) Magazine Agency, was held on July 24-26in Chengdu, the capital city of the Southwestern Sichuan Province.

The expo festival, the largest event of its kind in China, is held in July annually at China’s main exhibition cities in turns. Since July 2005, four sessions of CIEF have successfully been held at Zhengzhou, Changchun, Shenzhen and Changsha. It has gained reputation as “A Festival of Event Professionals”.

Nearly 600 people attended the festival including government officials and delegates from organizations and associations.

Themed with “confidence, transformation and development”, this festival was expected to boost Chengdu’s influence and reputation in the domestic exhibition and convention industry, and attract more large-scale events to be held in the city.

In fact, earlier this year, Chengdu, the provincial capital city that functions as the headquarters of the massive post-quake reconstruction operations, which was also affected by the earthquake, has announced plans to host a series of exhibitions and conventions to boost its exhibition economy, hoping to spur domestic demands in line with the central government's stimulus package against the negative impact imposed by the ongoing global economic slowdown and financial turmoil.

As the first move toward this end, Chengdu has hosted China National Sugar and Alcoholic Commodities Fair (Spring Session). The event, which was sponsored by China National Sugar and Alcohol Group Corp, was unveiled from Mar.21 to Mar.27. It is held twice a year in spring and autumn respectively and has become an import economic event for China's food industry. After half century of development, the Fair has become well-known in both China and abroad for its exhibiting area of 60,000 square meters, over 3,000 participants, and trading volume of over RMB 10 billion.

On April 16, 2009, the 7th China International Software Summit was held in this city. It is organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, (MIIT) the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the Sichuan Provincial Government, and undertaken by Chengdu Municipal Government and Sichuan Information Industry Department.

This year, about 1500 people attended the summit, including government officials and delegates from organizations and associations, as well as representatives of 650 enterprises such as Microsoft, Oracle, AMD, Fujitsu, Dawning, Huawei, Sina, Neusoft and Ufida.

The Summit has been held each year in Chengdu since 2003.

More events and exhibitions will be held on schedule in the following months, including the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair, the 12th Chengdu International Auto Exhibition 2009, the China International Food & Tourism Festival, etc.

Indeed, even hit by the quake, Chengdu didn't lose its appeal as the technological, commercial, financial center and logistics hub in western China. In 2008, over 260 conventions and exhibitions were held in Chengdu, 13% more than the pre-defined goal.

According to Chengdu municipal government, the city is scheduled to host over 280 conventions and exhibitions in 2009, aiming to promoting consumption by RMB 20 billion. Through these series of events, Chengdu is trying to seize the opportunities to showcase the city's new image in the post-quake era.

Thanks to the convention and exhibition economy, which is a significant player in the city’s service sector, Chengdu seizes the opportunities to impress the world. With more exhibition held in the city, the name of Chengdu will be more frequently heard and seen throughout the world. Moreover, the exhibition sector will help Chengdu’s service industries, such as catering, trading, financial and tourism.
