Chicago Tribune Slashes Almost 80 News Jobs
Here we go again...
The Chicago Tribune is eliminating about 80 editorial positions — roughly 14 percent of its newsroom staff — amid parent Tribune Company's campaign to cut costs as revenues decline.Employees were informed of the impending job cuts Tuesday afternoon. Two people familiar with the situation have confirmed the total to The Associated Press. They have requested anonymity because the company hasn't made a formal announcement.
One of the people tells the AP that the goal in this round of cuts is to trim $8.8 million in salary and benefits.
Newsroom employees were told 55 or 60 layoffs will be made by the end of August. The other 20 positions already are vacant.

More editorial cuts? How are these papers going to run? Or be worth reading?

Rob,
We really don't know. Que sera sera!

That's terrible. I don't think they will be worth reading soon - especially as the remaining staff are going to be stretched to the limit now.

If this means streamlining the workforce in the editorial room of Chicago Tribune, are we seeing a likely merger of the online and print works? How far, for better or worse, are we going to see an end in job cuts in newsrooms across the globe?

How can journalist or any in the production staff work without worries or fears in their hearts that one day or next they will be part of a list that will bid the newsroom goodbye? We really cannot blame Chicago Tribune or any other publications who recently embarked on large-scale job cuts, as this implies a growing worldwide economic erosion.
In my experience in the Philippines, poor people who live below one dollar a day will obviously not going to allot a fraction of that money to buy dailies or broadsheets but food to eat by the family. I cannot imagine how much more is the case in the United States, Europe or elsewhere.

Cutbacks, along with death, are the only constant in human life. Why is it when we want things to improve we give up on the inner workings that hold us together in the first place. I prefer print media to online, yes I use the internet, but when it comes to world news, local news or news of the wierd, I love reading. This is ludacris.

I recently went to Chicago with my family, and was able to pick up this amazing picture. It was my first time ever in Chicago, and I was so happy to be able to see the tribune. I have been working in journalisim for the past years and this was a great experience.

I find it such a shame that newspapers are in a state of decline.

This a reflection from the Trump Tower of the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, and other buildings near Wacker and Michigan in Chicago.

Wow.. in Canada we're going through the same thing - big editorial layoffs. Makes me wonder about the future of news. The "alternative media" is great but so much of it relies on the mainstream media being there. If mainstay media like the Chicago Trib, NY Times and, (in Canada), the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star etc. keep laying people off I wonder if any good news sources will take their place or if we'll default to 'Entertainment Tonight' type news ?!

This shot was actually taken from a moving car, as I was driving through downtown Chicago with family! I caught a glimpse of the Tribune building and impulsively grabbed my camera, and this is the result!
