The Chinese state-run Investment Corporation’s swooped for 8.7 per cent of the holding company that owns Thames Water, following a visit by Chancellor George Osborne to Beijing to forge closer ties between the two countries.

It is thought to be the sovereign wealth fund’s first investment in the UK and could pave the way for a number of similar moves as China’s huge economy continues to grow.

CIC chairman Lou Jiwei had said recently that his company was interested in investing in European and US infrastructure.
